June and July have been amazing: The weather was great almost all the times, several things – such as Maerudagar, concerts or other activities - were going on in Húsavík and the harbor area was often filled with people, that were excited about going out for whale watching.
Ages ago Skjálfandibay was shaped by a glacier that melted over time. Today, it’s a paradise for many animals. Two big rivers enter the sea on the southern side. Due to this, the bay is filled with minerals that are needed for the krill and fishes to exist.
Humpbacks spend the summer time around Iceland for feeding. Actually, they are considered to be one of the nicest whales for whale watching. For a good reason: Humpbacks like to show off and can be really curious about their surroundings.
Not only whale watching is popular with all age groups and therefore a fascinating experience, but also sea angling can be exciting for the young and the old. The other day I boarded a group of twelve passengers on our sea angling boat Athena.
The past days people in Húsavík were celebrating Mærudagar, an annual festivity taking place during the last weekend of July. Translated it means something similar to “Candydays” and just like candy, this festival is very creative and many-sided, but first and foremost it is colourful.
It was nearly 6:30 PM on Saturday, the 12th of July and the weather had considerably changed: from sun to light rain in a few hours. I was waiting for a group to embark Amma Sigga - ready to enjoy a Big Whale Safari.
A message in a bottle is what castaways used as a cry for help long times ago. Nowadays, everyone knows it from old stories or movies. But to find one is what one would never expect to happen. Though, that’s what happened to us yesterday noon whilst waiting for a humpback whale to surface again.
Personally, my favorite tours are those in the evening. The day is coming to an end and the quiet and calmness of the nature are indescribable. Then, the sun turns the sky in a hundred different colors.
The past three days our passengers and crew on both RIBS were able to spot some of the largest animals on earth. Surprisingly, two blue whales returned to Skjálfandi. In fact, it seems to be a mother with her calf.
Since a week the so-called Hybrid is back in our bay. Most likely that whale is a crossbreed of a fin and a blue whale. So far there is not much known about that animal. During its last stay in our bay (June 2014) researchers from Húsavík took an sample of its skin to find out more about this whale’s parents.
