Last night a new boat arrived to the harbour of Húsavík as an addition to Gentle Giant’s fleet. “She” is named Amma Sigga, just as the first RIB boat of the company, which came to Húsavík in 2011. Now it was time to upgrade her to a better boat to better serve our passengers.
July has started as successful as June ended. Yesterday, we saw the young humpback whale from the other day again. Just as last time it was still feeding close to the mountains and the rivermouth of Skjálfandafljót.
After two amazing trips in perfect weather conditions and very good sightings throughout the day, we started our last trip on Amma Kibba - looking forward to find the whales again. We knew that there was a blue whale in the middle of the bay so we were heading there - and spotted the blow! We got very excited, but it was diving for very long and we could not see it anymore.
The past month the whale watching went extremely successful. Blue whales came in huge numbers and were seen almost daily. A highlight was the blue whale mother with her calf, which is in fact still in the bay.
Already in the early morning the hybrid welcomed us on our oak boat Faldur. For a long time the whale surfaced in our nearer surrounding, sometimes getting really close to the boat. Close to the hybrid swam a humpback whale, resting on the calm surface.
Also today we got to see the blue whale mother with her calf. As the other days both of them surface a lot and don’t dive far away from our boats. That allows our passengers to get great views onto them.
Yesterday, the cruise ship from „Iceland Pro Cruise“ approached Skjálfandibay early in the morning for another time. Already then the sun shined bright above Húsavík. At 7am we left the village to sail out to Flatey.
The past weeks several blue whales – the largest animals on earth - have been visiting our bay over and over again. Even a mother with her calf has been showing up a couple of times. The other day a young fin whale appeared in between the extremely large blue whales.
The humpback whale feeding season is in full-swing in the bay right now, with many sightings in the last days. Among them, is a returning favourite whale known as "Snow White". The humpback whales come to the bay in the summer time specifically to feed on krill and small fish, and there have been many hungry humpbacks spotted on our tours recently.
