Today we got some rare visitors in Skjálfandi-Bay – KILLER WHALES! They showed up around noon when we were heading out on our boat Sylvía for the second trip. We were actually planning to sail towards the west side of the bay, where we saw several humpback whales during our first trip.
At Gentle Giants we are not only doing whale watching trips. Especially our RIBs can be used for a wide variety of tours, such as fun trips, staff trips, private tailor made tours and so on. This week our RIBs left Húsavík harbour three times for bringing groups out to Flatey, a small island in Skjálfandibay.
This afternoon we welcomed a group of 103 aboard our oak boats Faldur and Sylvía. Our passengers did not only get to see three different humpback whales from up close, but two of them were even swimming together.
Humpbacks are entering Skjálfandibay to feed. Hence, whenever there is enough food around more and more individuals come for a visit. Some of course leave again after some hours or a day, but others travel through the bay in search for food for either days or weeks.
In the past few weeks we have seen many pods of white-beaked dolphins in the bay. Today they were the stars on our two trips on Sylvía. We encountered large groups of these beautiful dolphins all over the bay.
Yesterday to well-known “faces” crossed our way: Humpbacks can be identified by the white patterns which they have on the underside of the tail. Some of course are more memorable than others.
Today has been fabulous: The sea has been completely flat, the temperature was simply pleasant and the whale status could not have been better. About 5 humpbacks swam in the same area near the mountains.
As the forecast predicted the weather has been constantly getting better. Already yesterday evening the sky cleared up and the sunshine blessed us on the last daily departure. At night some northern lights appeared and today started as sunny as yesterday ended.
Due to bad weather conditions we unfortunately had to cancel all our departures today. Seeing the weather forecast for tomorrow the conditions seem to change and constantly get better throughout the day.
A few hundred thousands of you already left around the 20th of August, but luckily we could enjoy some of you a couple of days longer. Lundey (Puffin Island), your home island is meanwhile empty. We will have to wait for your return until next May.
