The month of September is here and we will cut down our timetable to three scheduled whale watching tours daily; - GG1 Whale Watching at 9:45 and 13:15- GG2 Big Whale Safari at 12:30 (extra 9:30 departure if enough passengers) .

CELEBRATING A GOOD SEASON

After a great and busy summer together at Gentle Giants, our international staff is now splitting up for this year - like always in the end of August. Some go back to university, others to work in their home countries or elsewhere, until next summer when we reunite in Húsavík.

We have started feeling the first signs of autumn here. The vegetation‘s  coulors are slowly changing into various warmer shades, we can once again see northern lights on clear nights and many locals are back to school and work after their holidays.

TOP NOTCH WHALE WATCHING

"Absolutely mega superb!“ was how Gentle Giants' captain and CEO Stefán commented his 12:30 Big Wale Safari tour. Both passengers and crew got to enjoy five humpback whales, flat sea and temperatures of more than 20°c in Húsavík today.

SEASONAL CHANGES IN WILDLIFE OF SKJÁLFANDIBAY

During the past weeks, we have been noticing many changes in Skjálfandibay - just as wild nature is! The puffins, which have been staying on Puffin Island the entire summer, are ready to leave whilst huge groups of dolphins and many other seabirds are coming into the bay to join another feeding party: Mackerels have entered the bay in huge swarms, attracting more wildlife to spend time here.

COMING BACK TO THE BAY WHERE HE WAS BORN 49 YARS AGO

Sigurgeir – or Geiri, like everyone calls him – returned to Húsavík some weeks ago. Since then, he has been working as a captain on our whale watching boats, going out on our oak boats Sylvía and Faldur several times a day to show those majestic animals to the tourists.

IMPRESSIVE SUNSETS WHILST WHALE WATCHING

June and July have been amazing: The weather was great almost all the times, several things – such as Maerudagar, concerts or other activities - were going on in Húsavík and the harbor area was often filled with people, that were excited about going out for whale watching.

LUNCH TIME - 1 TON OF FISH

Ages ago Skjálfandibay was shaped by a glacier that melted over time. Today, it’s a paradise for many animals. Two big rivers enter the sea on the southern side. Due to this, the bay is filled with minerals that are needed for the krill and fishes to exist.
