After one day of bad weather and cancelled tours we were finally able to head out to Skjalfandi Bay this morning with enthusiastic whale watchers. The bay has been full of life today – three humpbacks and minke whales! On both our morning tours a humpback whale breached only a few metres from the boat – imagine seeing a 25-40 ton magnificent animal breaching just next to you!! The humpback is one of the most “acrobatic” of the whales.
Peter Waltl is our latest member of our team this year. He comes from Austria and is studying geography in Salzburg. It is a pleasure having him on our team this year – this is what he had to say about his first impressions … After travelling around for some days in Iceland, I finally arrived almost one week ago in this beautiful village – sorry, city, of course – to work here as a GG-Guide.
For the last days, whale watching and the weather have been up to its best. The Blue Whales visited us again, of a great pleasure; swimming and diving very close to the boat, giving our passengers the modeling site, followed by great photo shoots.
After several cold days, the weather is getting better; the sea is calm and the temperature is expected to rise for the coming days. During the morning trips today we have had Minke whales, Dolphins and Harbour porpoise.
Now in July we offer a fuller schedule of trips for our famous whale watching trips: 8:45, 9:45, 12:00, 13:15, 15:15, 16:45, 20:15. We hope everyone will have a time to fit their own schedule! Looking forward to receiving you in Húsavík! The GG team.
Safety for our passengers is the most important thing onboard our boats! At sea anything can happen and therefore it is important for our crew to be well trained and prepared for any kind of emergencies.
Alexia Askelöf is our newest crew member from Sweden and will be joining our team this summer. She arrived a few weeks ago, and her time of training has been absolutely “perfect”! This is what she had to say about her first impression of Skjálfandi Bay: María and I had the 12 o’clock tour together, two days ago on Faldur.
In our trip at 13:15 today our guides Daniel and Lia spotted five Blue whales, and some of them appeared only few meters from the boat of a great pleasure for the passengers.
After experience very cold northern climate for the past days, the sun is shining again in Skjalfandi Bay. Despite cold and wavy trips, the crew of Faldur and Sylvia has spotted big animals in the bay; Blue whales, up to five at the time, Humpback whales in close distance and jumping, and other smaller species, in small and large groups.
