SEASON COMING UP - HUMPBACK

The other day the people of Husavik did not even have to go out on the bay to be able to see whales. A humpback found its way into the harbour! Now we know that even some of the big whales are out there in Skjalfandi already.

DEAD HUMPBACK DRIFTED ASHORE

A carcass of a male humpback whale has drifted ashore close to the farm Unaós by Héraðs bay on the east coast of Iceland. Skarphéðinn G. Þórisson at the East-Iceland Institute of Natural History measured the whale together with the farmer at Unaós.

Not all whales migrate away from the cold Icelandic winters. One example of this is Grundarfjörður fjord, on the west coast of Iceland, which has been in the news lately because of big number of whales.

HUMPBACK WITH BROKEN BACK

It is weird and it is obvious. A humpback whale was spotted the other day, outside Port Allen in Hawaii. That in itself is not unusual, but the shape of it would make anyone look twice. A local pilot called Gerry Charlebois, found and photographed this odd humpback which seemed like broken on the middle.
