During the last days we have had a very unique whale in our bay. It is believed to be a hybrid of the two largest animal species on earth; a blue whale and a fin whale.This very special individual was also here two years ago, in 2011. It is big as a blue whale and has parts of its body coloured like one.
Our guide Veronika is only one out of all the lucky people who have got to enjoy the world's biggest whales in combination with the wonderful weather during the last days. Veronika writes: "Woooow - yesterday was a pretty speechless day for me, for sure! I have been working for Gentle Giants for less than two months, but I am such a lucky person I have a hard time to describe it.
Two blue whales were in our bay yesterday, and at least one of them is still there. "It was one of the most beautiful experiences i've ever had! Thank you for everything, we will never forget this!" one our passengers from yesterday's 19:00 Big Whale Safari wrote on Gentle Giants' facebook page.
Our scheduled tours, as well as our extra trips, have often been completely full during the last days (please book your tour in advance if possible, for you to have a secure place on board). This is July in a nutshell and luckily the whales have been numerous too.
Summer by Gentle Giants is busy like expected; many passengers on numerous departures, enough of whales in the bay and all the time there is something happening. Around 15:00 I went down to the harbour and met Elin, guide on the 12:30 Big Whale Safari & Puffins, when they arrived back from their tour.
A blue whale has entered the bay for the first time for several weeks. They have been rare so far this season, compared to recent years, which is most likely connected to foraging.Peter, guide on today's 9:45 tour, explained their blue whale experience like this: "First we had encountered lots of humpback whales, probably six of them, before we saw the giant blow and I realised it must be something even bigger! The whole thing got really exciting and we managed to get good views of this huge blue whale - which actually was really big also for being a blue".
Today all tours so far have been cancelled due to bad weather. The flags stand straight because of the strong winds and there are white horses on the sea. Luckily the forecast is better for tomorrow! At Gentle Giants we chose to use the time when whale watching was on hold to have a rescue drill.
June by Gentle Giants has consisted of amazing whale encounters, a brand new boat arriving and an unforgettable crew-wedding. A perfect month with other words! July is coming up and we add on several daily departures and we hope that you want to join and/or follow our coming adventures.
A comment straight from my heart became an internal joke and now, several years later, a dreamlike reality. "I would like to get married here". The Gentle Giants staff sat on the grass hill in Naustavík - across the bay - and this strong feeling of admiration bubbled up inside me.
Last night at 19.00 Amma Kibba was out on its first Big Whale Safari ever. Both me and captain Sverrir were very excited to do this tour on our new RIB, as she is a lot bigger and faster than little sister Amma Sigga.
