Only one week until we will finally sail out into Skjálfandi Bay again!Whilst everyone is waiting in excitement for the 1st of April to come, preparations are in full swing and everything is finally getting ready for our 2023 season.
Earlier this month our beautiful oak boat Sylvía undertook her annual journey to the harbor of Akureyri, where she was taken out of the water for some final beauty treatments. Time flies and after all necessary work had been finished, she was ready to sail back to her home port here by Húsavík yesterday morning.
As the days are passing by, we are getting closer and closer to our next season’s start: Less than three weeks and we will be sailing again! At Gentle Giants, we are a big group of people from all over the world working hard to make every season even better than the ones before.
Time flies and it is only a month until we start our 2023 whale watching season on the 1st of April. As every year during off season, all our boats undergo thorough maintenance. When it comes to our beautiful oak boat Sylvía, who is going to start our season next month, that meant to undertake her annual journey to the town of Akureyri and be taken out of the water for some final beauty treatments.
In one month our season starts again, April 1st, with daily departures until November 30th. We are very excited to start our 22nd year in offering whale watching and other exciting adventures from Húsavík.
Last week I was in India and visited my children's home in Kolkata where I was adopted from to Iceland 33 years ago along with other Húsavík children throughout the years. This was my second visit and a great experience to visit the children's home and get to know my origin in Kolkata.
Once again Gentle Giants is recognized for excellence. This time we are nominated for the 2023 Safety Prevention Awards by our insurance company VÍS. We are very proud of being one of top 3 companies in Iceland awarded this year for high safety procedures and quality operations.
Gentle Giants signed an agreement recently with local football girls to support their training trip to Denmark where they will visit and compete with professional football teams. The youth are part of north Iceland premier youth football league and this is a big opportunity for them to visit international clubs and improve their football skills and potential future careers.
After three years of no Mid-Atlantic due to COVID, it was a wonderful feeling to be back at Icelandair Mid-Atlantic Tradeshow which was held in Reykjavík last week for the 29th time. It offers the ideal setting for travel industry professionals from around the globe to meet, work together and exchange ideas, right in the midway between Europe and North America, Iceland.
What a successful and fun day we had attending the Mannamót – Natural Iceland Tourism Workshop yesterday in Reykjavík. It is always good to reunite with old friends and create new ones and Mannamót is a great platform to meet, as the name means "people coming together".
