Fin Whales are rather rare visitors in our bay and pass by only every now and then. Today not only one, but four at the time entered Skjálfandi and were seen in the morning. First all of them swam together, but splitted up after a while to swim in pairs.
Yesterday a German film crew joined us on our boat Athena. For filming the whale watching by Húsavík we’ve been out for a couple of hours exploring the waters and beauty of Skjálfandibay.
The other day an email packed with amazing photos reached us here in Húsavík. Hendrik de Vusser had been out with us on a whale watching trip on the 5th of September. When watching the photos I remember the trip which Hendrik de Vusser joined.
“After three summers on the bay witnessing amazing humpback moments, I finally captured in a photo the one everyone is waiting for,” writes our guide and researcher Charla. Humpback whales are known for their acrobatic behaviours.
Over night the weather conditions in the bay calmed down a lot and we were surprised by an almost flat sea this morning. Even though it stayed a little foggy throughout the day, we at least got a glimpse onto the Cheek Mountains on the other side of the bay.
After we had to cancel all our departures yesterday (15th of September), we were able to sail again as scheduled today. For the upcoming days the weather seems to get better and better. As the wind is going to calm down and most likely will turn into a southerly breeze we expect the sea to calm down a lot.
Due to bad sea conditions we had to cancel all our scheduled departures today. Looking at the forecast it is supposed to get better over night, though. Hence, we cross fins and fingers that the sea will be fine for sailing again tomorrow morning.
There are so many things that can be pointed out when one is sailing in search for whales! Small details can make a journey so different! When you are in Húsavik, you know you must be very close to a polar circle.
Today has been another beautiful day out sea. Not only our passengers were enjoying the sun and clear sky out at sea. A group of dolphins was showing off nearby the mountains. Jumping out of the water and showing up close to the boats they were simply fun to watch.
Since the beginning of September several humpback whales are staying the bay. Throughout the time they have been in the same area close to the mountains. Whilst some of them come and go, about 4 to 5 seem to be there all the time.
