As May proceeds, days are getting longer and longer - already now, evenings are bright and colourful. Finally, it won't be long anymore until we get to enjoy the midnight sun again! And while the sunlight hours are increasing daily, it is only two weeks from now until we will start to operate our late afternoon and evening tours again.
Humpback whales migrate large distances between their high latitude feeding grounds and their mating or calving areas in tropical waters. Some humpback whales might travel up to 5000 miles between these two regions! At the moment, plenty of humpback whales appear in our beautiful Skjálfandi Bay for their feeding season.
Since the beginning of May the bay has been getting livelier by the day. Several humpback whales – the stars of the bay - have arrived, but also other species such as minkes and white-beaked dolphins were sighted.
May has arrived and brought some first humpback whales along. These magnificent animals are finally returning from their breeding grounds in (sub)tropical waters where they have spent the winter months.
The month of April has marked the beginning of our current whale watching season. While it can be a bit more challenging to spot whales in those first weeks, it can as well be a month full of treasures! It's a month where all those whale species might show up that we rarely get to see in high season when the bay is frequented by our beloved humpback whales.
Today we celebrate "Sumardagurinn Fyrsti" - the first day of summer - here in Iceland. Back in the days, it was commonly regarded as a good omen if summer and winter “froze together,” (meaning that temperatures had to drop below zero in the night of the last day of winter to the first day of summer).
These last days, we finally enjoyed warmer temperatures - on land and at sea. Most of the snow in town has melted and a spring-like feeling caught us all. At the same time, from one day to the other, more and more migratory birds returned.
As half of the month is over, we are adding more daily departures to our current schedule: From now on, our oak Faldur departs twice a day at 09:45 and 13:15 for the "GG1 Whale Watching". At the same time, our RIB speed boats head out three times daily at 09:30, 12:30 and 15:00 for the "GG2 Big Whale Safari & Puffins".
As days pass by and we are approaching the mid of the month, our puffin season is not far away anymore. On the 15th of April we will finally start stopping by Lundey (Puffin Island) again on our “GG2 Big Whale Safari & Puffins” on our RIB speed boats.
