THE LITTLE ONES OF SKJÁLFANDI BAY

Did you know that summer is one of the best times to spot white-beaked dolphin calves in Skjálfandi Bay?

White-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) are the most common dolphin species found in Icelandic waters and one of the regular visitors to Skjálfandi Bay. They are usually seen during the feeding season from spring through autumn, often travelling in social groups that can range from just a few individuals to several dozen.

White-beaked dolphins live in the bay year-round, but during the summer months, mother-calf pairs are often seen travelling together. Newborn calves stay close to their mothers, learning how to navigate the waters of the North Atlantic and developing the skills they’ll need to survive.

If you’re lucky, you might spot these little dolphins during a summer tour, a special reminder that Skjálfandi Bay is not only a feeding ground, but also an important place for the next generation of marine life!
