HIDE AND SEEK
Hey, did you see me? No? Too slow!
How about another round of hide-and-seek?
Wait, what – did you just call me a dolphin? Dear human being, I AM NOT A DOLPHIN - I’m the elusive HARBOUR PORPOISE!
Just look at me: a rounded head, a short mouth, and a small curved dorsal fin. I’m dark grey on top, lighter on the sides, with a mostly white belly, and at around 1.5 metres long, I’m the smallest cetacean in Icelandic waters and among the smallest worldwide.
You’ll find me in coastal waters around Iceland and across the Northern Hemisphere, especially in shallow bays and near harbours. I’m quick, quiet, and usually surface for just a moment to breathe, so if you blink, you’ll probably miss me.
Skjálfandi Bay is a great place for me, full of tasty cod and, now and then, herring and mackerel. I usually travel alone or with one companion, though small groups of five to ten individuals sometimes come together. But where would the fun be if finding me was too easy?
I'll leave you with a challenge: the bet is on—will you spot me next time you visit Skjálfandi Bay?
