A FREEZING NIGHT, A PROMISING SUMMER

FIRST DAY OF SUMMER IN ICELAND HUMPBACK WHALE IN THE SUNSET

Sumardagurinn Fyrsti. In Iceland, summer begins today. According to the old Icelandic calendar, where the year is divided into just two seasons, the first day of summer falls on the first Thursday after April 18.

There’s also a long-standing tradition: if temperatures drop below freezing on the last night of winter, it’s seen as a good omen for a warm and prosperous summer ahead.

And last night, it froze! So here in Húsavík, we’re feeling optimistic and hoping for a season of great weather and unforgettable whale encounters.

Goodbye winter and welcome summer! Here’s to new adventures at sea!!
