THE OCEAN'S GREAT GIANTS

Three humpback whales

Today morning we welcomed the first blue whale of our 2026 whale watching season as it made a graceful round through Skjálfandi Bay. Witnessing the majesty of the blue whale, the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth, is always a truly unforgettable moment.

The number of humpbacks has also been increasing daily now: Throughout today, more and more individuals appeared on the eastern side of the bay, not far from Puffin Island. By the end of the day, at least 5–6 humpbacks were foraging and feeding in close proximity while swimming side by side, crossing each others paths, circling one spot or venturing off to the shallows east of the island for a while.

Since the season began on April 1st, we have now encountered six different species in order of appearance: porpoises, orcas, minke whales, humpbacks, dolphins, and now the blue whale. What a diverse and eventful April so far!
