NAUSTAVÍK IN WHITE
On days without fog, we get really nice views of the mountains around Skjálfandi Bay. The tops of the Cheek Mountains are covered with ice all year, but the colors of the mountains change a lot depending on the weather, sometimes white, brown, green, and even a bit red. It’s always a bit different every time we go out. These last days the mountains have been completely white, really beautiful to see.
When we have better chances to find whales in the west part of the bay, we sometimes sail that way and get closer to these mountains. It’s a quiet and beautiful area, and the views from the boat are really special.
One place we pass is called Naustavík. It’s a small bay surrounded by cliffs. The beach has black sand near the water. There’s also a river coming down from the mountain into the sea, and one single house above the beach! In the past, farmers and fishermen lived in these valleys and along the bays. It was a very isolated area, and people mostly lived on their own since it was hard to access for much of the year.
If the tour takes us in this direction, you might get to enjoy this view as well!
