WHISPERS OF WINTER

Aerial of Flatey Island in winter

Early winter has a way of slowing everything down and turning Skjálfandi Bay into a gentle wonderland.

The short days give the light a soft, almost magical touch. Sometimes you can see the sun and moon together in the sky, casting a delicate blaze of colours over the water. It’s the kind of light that makes even familiar places feel new.

The other day, we visited Flatey Island for the last time this season. The island sat quietly in the bay, lightly dusted with fresh snow that shimmered in the frozen air. Skjálfandi Bay itself seemed to glow under the pale, low light of the shortening days, turning the landscape into a subtle winter wonderland.

And the whales are still out there, moving gracefully through the bay, searching for food. Seeing them in this peaceful winter setting feels a little like glimpsing something magical — powerful, yet serene, a reminder of the wonders that quietly carry on even in the coldest months.

After all, the sea has always stories to share...
