WELCOME TO PARADISE!

The other day, on a sunny afternoon, yet another tour departed for beautiful Flatey Island on our oak boat Sylvía. Flatey, literally a small paradise just some miles out from Húsavík, offers a serene escape into nature and history.
Settled as early as the 12th century, it became a hub for fishermen and even farmers. At its peak in 1942, the island was home to 120 residents . The community thrived on mainly fishing, becoming one of the main exporters of salted fish to various European countries. At the same time, the soil was rich enough to allow farming, enabling the families to mostly sustain themselves and live largely independently from other communities on the mainland. However, by 1967, the last inhabitants departed, leaving behind a true paradise.
Nowadays, and despite its small size, Flatey is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The island hosts over 30 bird species during the summer months. Its fertile soil and rich marine life make it an ideal spot for birdwatching and nature walks. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Skjálfandi Bay and the surrounding landscapes as well as some whale watching on the way in or out.
Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking tranquility, Flatey Island offers a unique and enriching experience.
