HEY SNEAKY STINKY MINKE!
Even though humpback whales tend to be the species we spot in most of our tours, they aren't the only ones inhabiting Skjálfandi Bay.
Here in the bay we have many other species roaming around and one of them is our beloved sneaky stinky minke! You might find weird the way that I just introduced you to this whale but that's our nickname for the minke whale! You wonder why?
Minke whales, despite being quite frequent visitors to Skjálfandi Bay, they are not the easiest species to spot and to follow. They tend to be a bit shy with boats so normally the sightings are fleeting. They can also be fast animals, changing directions easily. However, sometimes we get lucky and they allow us to see them very well!
Okay okay I am only explaining the sneaky part, but where it comes the stinky? As humpback whales, minkes are also here with the purpose of finding food and eating as much as they can. Saying this most nicely, their breath doesn't have the best smell.
Because of their shy behaviour it is a little more tricky to collect data about them, so we still don't know much about their migratory routes and if there is a place where they go specifically during winter time. In Iceland we see them mostly during the summer months but in some places in Europe it is possible to see them throughout the entire year.
