A GIANT SURPRISE

a blue whale surfacing outside Husavik

Among an uncountable number of humpbacks, which were feeding in various areas of the bay yesterday, a giant surprise awaited us along the way: a huge blue whale was sharing the waters of Skjálfandi Bay with the humpbacks, probably to catch a well deserved snack whilst on its migration towards the Arctic. For a few hours it could be seen swimming calmly in the center of the bay. However, in the later afternoon it must have had decided to continue its way north as it disappeared as suddenly as it had shown up earlier in the day.

Blue whales are not only the largest species among all whales, but also the largest mammal that has ever roamed our planet. Imagine an animal of almost 30 metres in length floating near you on the surface of the ocean!
