WELCOME HOME DEAR FRIEND

hybrid whale surfacing

Since this morning a well-known whale can be seen from our boats: the blue-fin-hybrid arrived to Skjálfandi Bay! Thanks to the hybrid’s dorsal fin it can be easily recognised as the same individual whenever it shows up here in the North.

Indeed, it became a frequent visitor over the years and has often approved as an extremely “whale-watching-friendly” whale as it stays around the boats a lot.
A few years back researchers took a skin sample of the whale in order to find out which species it was and the crossbreed got approved.
As for its appearance, the whale is as large as a blue whale and has a blue-whale-like pattern on its body, however, the animal is a lot darker than the blues. In general, it is more coloured dark grey like a fin whale. Also the dorsal fin looks a lot like that of a fin whale (though the fin is damaged, which makes it very easy to distinguish and identify it).
As the hybrid keeps showing up so often, many of us got to know the whale well and everyone gets excited once news of its arrival spread! Furthermore, in previous times the hybrid was tending to hang out in the bay for quite some time, which means chances are high of it being sighted on upcoming tours as well!
