WHALE WATCHING AND A TOUR AROUND FLATEY

Previously this week we had the pleasure of taking a group of Icelandic school students to beautiful Flatey. This time of year in Iceland is when the school year in Iceland ends. It is not uncommon for grade schools in Iceland to go on a school trip to celebrate the end of another semester. These 8-10 grade students wanted to do something special and decided to come to Húsavík to join one of our specialized tours.

Flatey is Iceland´s fifth biggest island and is located 25 kilometers north-west of Húsavík. It is a remote island with many different species of birds nesting there during the summer time, including puffins and arctic terns. Today it is not an inhabited island, but 50 years ago, there were people living on the island all year round. By going to the island you will see beautiful nature, but also an island that used to have a community.

We had a lovely day with the kids and teachers. We saw several humpback whales on the way to the island and back. While on the island we had a barbecue and everyone got the chance to explore Flatey.
