FABULOUS OCTOBER

two humpback whales

Winter is definitely arriving to Skjálfandi Bay as it gets colder and colder at sea. As time passes, one would assume the whales will soon leave and start their journey towards warmer waters. However, it turns out NOT to be the truth: Even though our whale watching season will finish in less than a month, whale-wise we can’t really see any difference to the summer time - the bay is still frequented by several humpback whales!

Here is guide Miro’s story:

“Just the other day, I knew already before our tour had started that it’s going to be amazing out there. Passengers on-board of Amma Helga were happy upon arrival and in a very good mood already before we set off! Our tour started with very well-known Snow White – one of the best known humpback whales here. Then, just a couple of minutes later more whales appeared. Eventually we could spot about eight different humpback whales! For some time four of them were even swimming next to each other, diving at the same time and coming back up one right after the other. Busy with feeding, it looked like they were trying to catch as much food as they could before having to go into warm waters (where there is no food around) for the winter time. It was just an excellent show!
So do not hesitate, if you are in Iceland you still have a great chance of seeing these magnificent angels of the oceans!
This is wild nature of course and we cannot predict what is going to happen on tomorrow’s tour. Important is: bring good mood with you, keep your eyes open for a whale’s back and your chances of being rewarded by mother nature are very good!”
