THE GIANTS RETURN

Hybrid whale dorsal fin

After yesterday’s blue whale (which turned out to be the same individual as the one that visited us already in April), more blue whales are arriving in Skjálfandi Bay. Still swimming far out in the north, only our RIB speed boats were able to reach them in the morning. However, they seem to have moved a bit further in by now and some have already been seen from the oak boats.

But it is not only blue whales that started to return. Yesterday afternoon a well-known friend was welcomed by our guests. The blue-fin hybrid whale, which has been visiting Skjálfandi Bay for several years in a row now, showed up near the Kinnarfjöll mountain range. The whale is easily recognizeable by its dorsal fin. Whilst for some years we were just guessing that he could be a hybrid, two years ago that assumption got approved by scientists.
