BLUE WHALE IN THE BAY!

On the 9:30 GG2 Big Whale Safari & Puffins tour this morning we were lucky enough to spot the summer’s first blue whale! It surfaced soon after we left Puffin Island, first showing us it’s impressive 10-metre blow. We slowed down and as we crept towards it we saw it begin to dive. It revealed its beautiful tail, which can be over seven metres wide, as it took a downward path into the depths.
We waited for it to resurface for what felt like a very long time, longer than waiting for a humpback. Finally, it arrived back on the surface to take several more breaths and all of our guests had an amazing view of the largest animal that has ever existed. It took another dive, and after admiring its immense tail flukes once again we left it in peace to continue feeding.
Further south in the bay we were treated to lightning-fast harbour porpoises, rolling minke whales and curious humpbacks, many of which were mere metres from our boat, Amma Kibba. It was the best way to start our day at Gentle Giants.

Even though not too common for blue whales, this one lifted its fluke several times!
Blue whales can get up to 30 metres in length and are by far the largest animals that have ever lived on this planet!
