THE APPOINTMENT WITH A HUMPBACK

Today’s 12:00am departure on Faldur turned out to be one of the most memorable from this summer so far! We had been sailing, looked at some playful dolphins and a minke whale. The weather was excellent: sun and a calm sea. We had sailed into the bay a little bit and were not making progress looking around when our captain Sigurgeir told me he had ordered a meeting with a humpback and that it would come right to us. I agreed and told him that it was a good plan and that this whale might even jump for us!

Then just a half a minute later we see a blow and a HUMPBACK going for a dive. We sailed towards it in hope of a better view. The luck was with us: a wonderful humpback started to swim calmly on the side of the boat. Well, he wasn’t that calm: Suddenly, short after he went for a dive, he started breaching. Not once, not twice but 12 TIMES in a row! Our captain had not seen anything like that and we were all thrilled to witness it.

The humpback surfaced again for a little bit and then even breached two more times! We watched it for a little bit longer, whilst it was resting after all that breaching. Then we sailed home in the sunshine, happy about our encounter with such a big animal showing off its might.
