WHERE THE LARGEST ONES MEET UP

The past weeks several blue whales – the largest animals on earth - have been visiting our bay over and over again. Even a mother with her calf has been showing up a couple of times. The other day a young fin whale appeared in between the extremely large blue whales. Adult fin whales are only slightly smaller than the blue whales and therefore, the second largest whale.

But today has been exceptional! A blue whale, fin whale, a hybrid (a mix of fin and blue whale) and a sei whale were seen by our RIB Amma Kibba on the afternoon and evening tours!

In the afternoon our crew and passengers got surprised by the sei whale, which are rarely swimming into bays. This one even approached the boat and finally dived underneath – from one side of the boat to the other. Even though they are among the fastest swimming whales, our guests got several good views onto the mammal.

In the evening we got to see the hybrid and a blue whale swimming together. Whilst the blue whale was feeding close the surface, the hybrid decided to check us out and circled around the RIB for a while, breaking the surface just a couple of metres away from the boat. The same hybrid has been visiting us the past years and even showed up earlier this season already.

Everyone onboard was extremely excited for getting to see some of the largest animals that ever lived on our planet!

The well-known hybrid with its significant dorsal fin. This whale is visiting Skjálfandibay year after year. This season, it is showing up for the second time already!
