WATCHING THE BIGGEST ANIMAL ON EARTH

As weather conditions were allowing us to head pretty far out into the bay during our 09:45 trip yesterday morning, we decided to search a new area for whales. To make this decision was the best we could do!

After a quite long, but very nice boat ride with beautiful views on the surroundings, we finally spotted a big blow. When trying to get closer to that whale we noticed that it was not the only one in that area. Still waiting for the blow to appear again we encountered two humpbacks, resting peacefully in the area next to mountains, which are close to Flatey Island.

While we were still observing those two whales, which were even approaching our boat on their own, making it easy for us two spend some time with them, we located the huge blow again.

We decided to turn the boat and try to get a closer look at this whale. Luckily, this time it did not disappear for a long while and soon we were eye to eye with a big blue whale. Also enjoying its stay in the waters of Skjálfandi Bay it turned out that the whale, which is known as the biggest animal on earth, did not mind our company at all. Instead it started drifting next to our boat, not going down for a long dive, but staying close to the surface for almost half an hour.

Not only for the tourists, but also for the captain and me, it was an experience we never had before. The impression you get while having a blue whale, which is approx. 20-30 meters in lengths, next to a 14 meter long boat, is something you can not express in words.
