EXPLORING NEW WATERS

It is always interesting to explore new areas, to sail new seas. Today Daniel and I got the chance to experience the Outer Hebridean waters, in the north west of Scotland. An adventure to remember...

Iceland has very strong historical connections to this area, ever since the Vikings sailed those waters. The nature and climate is very similar to Iceland, as well as the fact that the locals are dependent on the sea and its resources.

Today Daniel's uncle Ian took us for a tour on the sailing boat Sulaire. This man is a true sailor living in Stornoway, on the isle of Lewis, with a whole life of experience behind him.

Together we were five onboard who enjoyed the wind in our hair and the sound of the waves. In a calm bay we tried our luck with some fishing rods. It was not as easy as in Husavik; no catch this time, but it is always exciting to try...

When it was time to turn back to Stornoway, Daniel and I got a practical sailing lesson. A light breeze brought us all the way into the harbour again, where a grey seal poked up its head and welcomed us back. During the sail we also spotted a grey heron, oystercatchers, guillemots, ducks and gulls.

The amount of fish we did (not) catch, the birds and the number of marine mammals was nothing compared to what we are used to in Skjalfandi Bay. Still we got a really nice sail which made us look even more forward to start up the whale watching season at Gentle Giants.

Unfortunately the fish were not as easily flirted here as in Husavik...
