LIKE FATHER LIKE SON

“It’s never too early” says Captain Óðinn as he brings his new born son for another whale watching tour. It is not the first time Ásþór Haukur, just two months old, is out at sea. He is giggling loud when his father holds him out through the captain’s window, much like Simba is lifted up by Rafiki over the Pride Rock in The Lion King.

Since the first settlement of Húsavík, generations of fishermen have been brought up in this town, following their ancestors’ footsteps out at sea. It is about culture, history and to make one’s living. Old expressions about weather, waves and winds would soon be forgotten if it was not for children like Ásþór Haukur. He is a perfect example of a fisherman’s son who will keep the old Icelandic traditions alive. That is at least what Óðinn is hoping for. “You see, he’s got at feeling for it already!” the proud dad burst out when the baby grabbed the steering wheel on Sylvía. Maybe he is a part of the new generation fishermen in Húsavík...?
