NORTHERN BOTTLENOSE WHALE SPOTTED

On my 2nd tour today onboard Sylvia together with guide Maria we encountered a special surprise. We headed west along the coast of Skjalfandi to an area where we had been spotting some minke whales on the last tours.

After looking at two minke whales we spotted another dorsal fin of a whale in the distance. At first we thought it was another minke but when we got closer we realised that this animal something totally different to a minke. In fact, what we had in front of us was a northern bottlenose whale!

Those animals are indeed quite uncommon in the bay but were seen last summer for several weeks. They prefer deeper waters and are able to dive very deep and long in search of food.

It was a very nice surprise to see the bottlenose whale and hopefully it will stay for some time like last year …
