A POD OF ORCAS SPOTTED

This day started quite harsh, with southern winds and no whales seen on our morning trip. As unpredictable as nature can be, the situation in the bay can change anytime and on the next tour – only ca. 1 ½ hour after the morning tour – our boat found a pod of orcas, which is quite uncommon in Skjalfandi Bay!

This pod consisted of seven animals – two females with their offsprings. The orcas belong to toothed whales and are easily idendified by their tall dorsal fin, which can be up to 1.8 m by male orcas. They can be up to 9 m in length and weigh between 4-6 tons. This pod of orcas was spotted near to land inside the bay, and were swimming very close to the boat. The following pictures were taken on the tour by our guide Magda.
