FIRST 4 ... THIS YEAR ...

This evening some of Gentle Giants crew members noticed that humpbacks had arrived into Skjálfandi Bay. Of course those crew members sailed out to Skjálfandi Bay to greet those magnificent animals.

Just outside Husavik harbour a few big spouts were seen. In all 4 humpbacks and 1 minke whale were seen, swimming calmly through the waters – busy feeding just beneath the surface.

Stefán Guðmundsson, Gentle Giants’s  manager, has been fishing this winter on a new auto-long-liner, Aron ÞH with a crew of 4 in rough seas and sometimes heavy storms.  Catching has been rather good despite tough weather conditions; and such conditions can only be dealt with by very experienced captains, who then again use their experience sailing for Gentle Giants during the whale watching season.

According to Stefán, this is the first time since early 90’s that capelin run into the bay, in such amount and followed by fish, birds & whales. There has also been a lot of guillemot lately – feeding for the upcoming breeding season next couple of weeks.
All this looks very promising and is hopefully a great start of a good summer!

Hereunder are some pictures that were taken tonight. Pictures taken by Hafþór Hreiðarsson.

When taking a deep dive, humpback whales nearly always raise their fluke before diving.
