Our season is coming to an end, and now in Septeber we reduce our daily trips down to one, at 13:15. Last days have been quite good, weather has been improving and Minkes and Humpbacks have been spotted on every tour.

This morning our guide Jesse Flores shot some pictures of the Humpback that has stuck around Skjálfandi bay despite the storm we had for four days. This humpbak is easily recognized by the bumps on it´s back, behind it´s blowhole, and this morning it was very at ease while sliding with our boat Faldur.

All the whale watching departures were cancelled the last days due to bad weather conditions – strong northern winds and rough sea. This is the first time that tours have been cancelled so many days in a row.

Yesterday Gentle Giants staff ventured out for a staff celebration. At first the course was taken to Akureyri where the Gentle Giants staff showed excellent talent in ice-skating. But not only in skating, also in playing hockey – the pro style.

As forecasted, weather has been at it´s best on this late August Day and as if it wasnt just enough, a Fin Whale was spotted by our crew onboard Faldur on the 13:15 trip. Passengers enjoyed the presence of this second largest of all whales for quite a good period of time, and the trip was a complete success – passengers were delighted to see this rarely viewed and humongous creature.

The life in Skjalfandi bay can change very fast and no two trips are the same. The minkes are known to be very curious and today they actually were in some of our tours … a minke was spy-hopping next to our boat FALDUR and another one was spotted just about 500 metres from Husavik harbour! Dolphins were also seen in Skjalfandi today …A new whale watching departure has been added to our schedule: 08:45.

This weekend is called “verslunarmannahelgi” (Merchants’ weekend) which is a 3 day weekend, with Monday being the holiday of the salespeople. Lately however the salespeople have been the only ones working at this very weekend, and everyone else goes out camping.
