INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY

Today, 8th of March, we celebrate International Women´s Day.

We at Gentle Giants are not only proud of a very international team, but also for having women employed in nearly all work fields within the company: in customer service (prior to your arrival as well as on-site, at the ticket center as much as around our meeting points by the harbour), as guides and captains on the boats as well as in the office and management.

The ocean surrounding Iceland is not only playing a big role in our nation nowadays, but has been so as long as one can remember. While back in the days fishing was the main reason to head out at sea, today one can find all kinds of seafaring adventures around the country – whether that is to watch whales, birds, try oneself in sea-angling, admire islands, fjords or nature and so much more.

What hasn’t changed is the role women have played in the work at sea since the early days. There are records of women at sea going back to the mid-900s. Later, during the 18th and 19th centuries, women comprised a whole third of the fishing fleet in several parts of the country.

While the number of women on fishing vessels might have declined over time, you’ll still come across notable many women working at sea and on boats nowadays – especially in tourism!
