FOLLOWING THE WHALES' MIGRATION

Continuing introducing stories of our passionate guides who follow the whales around the world.

Humpback whales are believed to be one of the mammals in our planet that are taking some of the longest migration, at about 16000 to 24000 km each year. That is very much because they depend on migration either to find their food in summertime in the cold high productive nutrient rich waters of our planet (like Húsavík, Iceland), and their partners to reproduce and calve their newborns in the warm tropical places during wintertime (like Baja California, México).

Some of our guides, knowing about these whale circulations, migrate with them. That is the example of Rui and Sara, both biologists from Portugal that are now spending their 2nd year in Mexico working as tour guides on whale watching boats, learning and educating guests from around the world.

"It is just wonderful being able to see these majestic creatures all year round. And to be able to travel in the meantime and get that good portion of Vitamin D for the upcoming season in Iceland," Rui adds. "Latin America is just a warm welcoming feeling, a lot of life happening outside the sea as well and the food is great. Besides that, Baja California and the sea of Cortez is well known for its marine life and abundance, which we get to experience whenever some time off we have!"

He concludes by saying: "The work as an ocean guide can be tough and demanding, but it is very much rewarding spending the life by the sea."

Rui and Sara will be back in Húsavík soon for the upcoming season, ready to share their passion for wildlife and knowledge with guests on board Gentle Giants boats!
